Couple Meets NYPD Detectives Who Found Missing Engagement Ring

Couple Meets NYPD Detectives Who Found Missing Engagement Ring

Two weeks ago, our first guest
got engaged in New York City. And on the same day, they lost
their engagement ring down a grate in Times Square. What happened next
was a worldwide search to find the couple and
reunite them with their ring. All the way from
Peterborough, UK, please welcome Daniella,
her fiance, John. This is quite a story. As soon as I started
telling this story, everyone knows this story. So, hi. Thanks for being here. And so, you got engaged
that day, right? Yes. Earlier in the
park, you proposed? Yes, Central Park, so yeah. Daniella was spending
some time in the leaves, throwing them up and down,
getting some Instagram worthy photos. And yeah, she was flicking
through her phone, having a look at what
was Instagram worthy. Yeah, I had no idea. And you knew you were going
to do it there in the park. Yeah. I’d been walking around
New York for two days with this ring in my
pocket, constantly touching it to make sure it was there. And yeah, so Central Park, one
of the most beautiful places in New York– it just felt right. So, OK, so how long after
you– so you’re in the park. You’re wearing the
ring, obviously. And how long after when you’re
walking down the street, and it drops? We literally had the ring,
what, maybe six, seven hours? Six or seven hours. OK, so you were just
walking down the street, and it just slipped
off your finger? Well, yeah, we were
walking back from a show and went to grab
Daniella’s hand, just to– I was just so in amazement,
looking at the ring. Look at the ring, and yeah. So you did it. You knocked it off. Yeah, it was my fault. Yeah. If we go back a little bit,
we were in the hotel room, prior to going out to the show. And Daniella said, you know. I actually said, John,
it’s a little bit big. I really don’t know if
I want to wear the ring. But he insisted. Daniella, we’ve
just got engaged. 10 years we’ve been together. 10 years you waited
on this ring. Come on, it’s staying
on your finger. It’ll be fine. Let’s go. So again, your fault. My fault, yeah. We’re blaming everything on him. All right. Just reinforcing, again, that
it’s your fault. All right, so it could have just fallen
on the sidewalk, but instead, it falls in a grate. In a grate, yeah. So it slips off in slow motion. I could still visualize it. It comes off. It bounces once. It bounces twice, and then
right into that grate. Oh. It’s just absolutely– So, look. So everyone knows this video
where you’re laying down. A few people stopped, right? Oh yeah. There was lots of
people stopped. So many people stopped. So many people
stopped to console us. I mean, Daniella was– I was heartbroken. Heartbroken, inconsolable. It’s just every girl’s
worst nightmare. Yeah. I was sobbing. I never want to see Daniella
that upset again in my life. In one day, you see
complete joy and then– Yeah, from joy and happiness
to absolute devastation. And I’m trying to
pull up at this grate, trying my best to
pull this thing up. Those things couldn’t lift. Could you see the ring? No. Oh, so it went so
far down that you– So far down. Yeah, so Daniella
hailed a police officer. They came over. They radioed a few others. They sealed off the place. They got the special equipment
out, opened up the grate. They were down there,
torches, having a look. And after– it must have been
at least an hour and a half, two hours, they just said sorry. But then they did find it. Well, they went back the
next day, little did we know. So for us, the
ring, it was gone. We were engaged to the
New York subway system. And yeah. And then how did you find
out that someone found it? So we got back to the UK. And a friend sent a
WhatsApp and said, hey, [INAUDIBLE] A ring dropped. Is this you guys? And we were like– Because we hadn’t even
told our family or anybody what had happened. Yeah, we’re not going
to put a negative spin on our engagement in New York. They would have been
so angry at you. Well, yeah. Again, that was
my fault as well. So yeah, we get this message. And we’re like, oh my god,
Daniella, they found our ring. They found our ring. I mean, I don’t know
anywhere in the world where a police department
or two police officers would have went back
the next day to– Yeah, amazing. And where is the ring now? They’re still with the New
York Police Department, where– That’s right. They are. It’s still there. Come on out. [MUSIC – BEYONCE, “SINGLE
LADIES”] Because if you
liked it, then you should have put a ring on it. If you liked it, then you
should have put a ring on it. Don’t be mad once you
see that he want it. If you liked it, then you
should have put a ring on it. Oh, oh, oh, oh,
oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Thank you. Thank you so much. Congratulations. Because if you
liked it, then you should have put a ring on it. If you liked it, then you
should have put a ring on it. Don’t be mad once you
see that he want it. If you liked it, then you
should have put a ring on it. I got gloss on my
lips, a man on my hips. Wow. Thank you. Got me tighter than
my Dereon jeans. Acting up, drink in my cup. Oh. Come on, you can all fit. All right. We can’t afford a bigger sofa. So look what they
have right there. You guys dropped something. We did. Oh my gosh. I’m shaking again. Wait, one moment. There’s no grate, sorry,
anything like that in here? That would be funny if we
had a grate under here. Uh huh, there it is. That is the ring, right? That is our ring. Make sure it’s the right
one that we pulled up. There we go. Let’s give them some space. Oh my gosh. Are you ready for this? Is it OK? Yeah? So, for the second time. I can’t believe it, really. Would you be my wife? Yes. [APPLAUSE] These are happy tears. Happy tears. Wait, they brought
you another gift. Would you hand it to them? $8 goes a very long
way these days. We got some ring
adjusters for you please. Don’t drop it again. All right? I won’t. [LAUGHS] [APPLAUSE] Thank you, guys. Thank you so much. Thank you. Congratulations. It means the world to us. You guys are awesome. Thank you so much. We’ll be right back. We’re back with
Daniella and John. And I forgot to ask you earlier. Do you all have a wedding date? We’re thinking June 2020. Give us a little bit of
time just to save up, enjoy being engaged. Enjoy actually being engaged. Yeah, be able to wear
that for a little while before you lose
the wedding ring. Yeah, no more lost rings. No. No more lost rings, but that
was exciting though, right? I mean, it’s a great story. Yeah, I mean, yeah. The speech was a maze. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, from
getting off that plane in New York, absolutely
heartbroken and devastated, to what’s been an
absolute roller coaster. And to finally come on
an amazing show with– An hour on The Ellen Show. And two amazing police
officers as well. They really were
amazing to do that. And it shows you all the
good in the world right now. We need stories like this
because there were so many people that helped
make this happen. So– Absolutely. Thank you to them. I have a wedding gift for
you because our friends at Shutterfly want you to
have an amazing wedding. And to celebrate
the moment, they’re going to give you
$10,000 to help pay. [APPLAUSE] Oh, wow.
